07:26 pm - on the creation of net identities...
So here's something that has been weighing on my mind. Where did your net identity come from? Some of them, like anukul and jameel are obvious. But most people don't use their real name as an email address or LJ name, presumedly because most people have pretty ordinary names and Mike and Stephanie (or whatever) are just already taken.

So here's the question (or questions really): Where did you get your LJ name? Do you use it other places? Email? Other websites? RPGs? IM? Do people call you that in real life? How did you come up with it? Obviously, a bunch of people on my friends list are wrestlers, and use their gimmick name, but if that's you, where did you come up with that?

For some reason made up names that have no obvious meaning to a person's personality (say qiika and drfell) or that are based on a persons name (either real name or gimmick name - sui66iy and kingdomjames) seem to ring truer to me than ones that are based on something about a person's personality or hobbies (like stuntviolist or dariaphoebe - no offense to either of you), do other people feel like that? I don't think I have any like this on my friends list here, but back when i used to use Epinions a lot, the names that always really bugged me were the ones that were based on an aspect of a loved one, like bobbysmommy or joes_wife or something like that. It just seemed weird that a person chose their identity as an aspect of someone else. Kind of belittling or something?

So the cultural theorist in me is really curious about this sort of thing. Please take a second to leave your name orgins and your thoughts and please point others who I don't know here to do the same. I want to see what people really think about this.

EDIT: Come on, work with me people. So far I only have one additional person that I don't know. I actually want to hear from as many people as possible on this one. papertygre had the right idea. Think of it as a meme.

Where did you get your LJ name?

The King of Hearts. He is the only face card with his sword through his head.

Do you use it other places?

Not Really. It's a stricly LJ name.

Email?

No

Other websites?

Nope

RPGs?

HA HA... NERD!! (What V:tM books?)

IM?

No.

Do people call you that in real life?

djbattlemoneky, but really who knows what the fuck will come out of his mouth at any given moment.

How did you come up with it?

When I created my LJ, I wasn't having alot of luck with the ladies. I thought it would be oh-so-ironic to name myself after the King of Hearts to reflect this.
[User Picture]From: chrismaverick Date: January 24th, 2005 - 03:44 pm (Link)
so, in your case, I actually knew that the suicide king was a reference to the king of hearts. I just didn't know why you'd picked it. So do you typically pick different names for different websites and stuff? Do they always have some hidden meaning?

The bobbysmommy style ones kind of weird me out, too. What, there's nothing else about you other than your relationship to another person?

Ones like mamadeb don't weird me out, though - I mean, sure, include your mothering aspects or your wifely aspects or whatever, but...eh. I guess I am not good at explaining why one bugs me but the other doesn't.

And mine's part of my name. Has been since the day I was born. And it's very rarely taken anywhere, so it's convenient.

curiously, having a reference to being a mom in the name, doesn't really bug me. My mom's LJ is mamarayne. It sort of makes sense. Now if she'd chosen "mavsmom", that would have just been weird.

I needed a name for LiveJournal as the usual was predictably taken. I was being cranky about it, hence the suggestion.

I would assume shadow is taken most places, is it not? Who suggested the grumpy name?

"Papertygre" is a play on the fact that my personal name refers to a tiger character. The term, of course, means something that seems fierce but really isn't, which helps me feel more comfortable acting/speaking without obsessing too much that my actions will be misinterpreted: it reminds me that appearances are often misleading. I also like the reference to paper - the clean blank surface on which creation is ready to take place. (I wrote this some time ago - whole thing here)

I use it pretty much everywhere (for personal things, not things like credit card accounts though). I don't know where I got it - in 1998 while I was at work I needed an AIM username and that just popped into my head. 'papertiger' and 'papertyger' were taken, so 'papertygre' it was.

I agreed with you that 'bobbysmommy' or something else incidental like that is a really flavorless and disappointing kind of name.

Dave can't hear or doesn't listen and he thought my name was Caroline. Katherine. Marmalade.

Strangely, "marmalade" is always taken. So I vary it as marmaladium or marmal8, neither of which ever seem to be taken.

I don't like marmalade, the condiment.
[User Picture]From: chrismaverick Date: January 24th, 2005 - 03:48 pm (Link)
ok... I don't get it. Did he get your name different each time? Or did he think your full name was Caroline Katherine Marmalade?

Not that I have any idea who Dave is.

One day I was in McKeesport, and I noticed a pigeon that was limping. While a sad thing to see, I thought "Hey, 'Limping Pigeon" could be a band name." but since I didn't have a band, I started using it as an ICQ handle. I eventually started using it everywhere because, well, it was never taken. And it's a highly memorable screen name.

LiveJournal is one of the few places I still use the name. On rare occasions, I still use it on AIM, or Yahoo! Messenger.

For the most part, other places, I've switched to using names such as "Benwhoski" (an obvious joke on my last name), and "LostAngles" (the home of the home of my favorite character from the cartoon "Reboot").
[User Picture]From: chrismaverick Date: January 24th, 2005 - 04:39 pm (Link)

i think i already told you this, but mine's pretty boring.

eyanyo == eric michael yanyo.

i use this for my personal email address also, but most other places (message boards and the like) i go by "tviyh" -- remarkably that was already taken on LJ though -- which stands for "the voice inside your head" which is the name i use when recording music. any relation to nine inch nails lyrics is purely coincidental.
[User Picture]From: chrismaverick Date: January 24th, 2005 - 04:41 pm (Link)
it actually sort of surprises me how many people pick user names from song lyrics.

Mine is, in fact, based on my name (Rachel Partain). It is a contraction of a nickname that an old friend gave me (Rackle Poontang). I used it at Neopets first, and got my LJ not too long after. (And with my presence on LJ becoming more and more widespread, people I know IRL - either through LJ or predating it - have started calling me Rackletang as a nickname. Which is a funny sort of full-circle for a 16 year old nickname.)
[User Picture]From: chrismaverick Date: January 24th, 2005 - 04:43 pm (Link)
hmmm... I thought it was just a made up workd. Never occured to me that it had any relationship to your name. Thanx for sending other people to comment, btw.

Rotation

higgins
sui66iy

The rotation would perhaps work slightly better as
su!66!y

but I find that unaesthetic for some reason. I discovered this at CMU one evening in some sort of ASCII fugue state, and it sat around in the back of my brain for years until I started using it on AIM. Obviously it has nice uniqueness properties.

Re: Rotation

hahahaha, wow. Nice. Never caught that before. I always assumed it was some random identifier chosen so that it could be consistent across accounts.

[User Picture]From: redfox Date: January 22nd, 2005 - 07:10 pm (Link)
I have used three different names (or variations of) throughout the years:

RedFox:
Back when I was more religious, this is what I believed my spirit animal was. I identify with many of the fox qualities (such as the ability to adapt to multiple situations). Add to this my addiction to dyeing my hair red...:) Its been a name thats always stuck with me over the years. I have quite a few dear friends who call me Red regularly, and I love it. Many of them don't usually call me by my real name. I used it as my first IRC login.

Cyllan:
Took the name from one of the main characters in the Time Master Trilogy, by Louise Cooper. This was one of the first screen names I ever had anywhere. I not only love the way the name looks/sounds, the character seemed much too like myself. This was my first AIM nick, and my BBS nick.

SilPhoenix:
Mostly from my love of 1. silver 2. the phoenix. I always refered to myself as a phoenix due to my ability to be completely destroyed in life emotionally, but to be able to come back, relatively unscathed. This was one of my alternate AIM nicks, and I used to roleplay with it often.

Nothing too creative, I know...but they're all parts of myself.
[User Picture]From: chrismaverick Date: January 24th, 2005 - 04:47 pm (Link)
what color is your hair really then? Brown? Red seems to be the major hair color of choice for most light brown haired girls I know. Perhaps that's another survey waiting to happen.

And really, your answers were plenty interesting.

So here's the question (or questions really): Where did you get your LJ name?
It's my initials and 2 random letters. It's similar to my old CMU login (nc2d, I think), but I for some reason find it more aesthetic to use just letters. I can't remember if I first used it for LJ or something else.

I used to use deimos, which besides being a moon of Mars was the name of a radio show I did, a laptop computer my ex-boyfriend used to use, and the name of my best high school friend's now elderly cat. I don't really know why I changed, except deimos is often taken on the internet these days.

Do you use it other places? Email? Other websites? RPGs? IM?

Yes. Not for email (strangely, it was taken on comcast, which is my secondary account), but on other websites I do use it - primarily lovehkfilm.com and hfboards.com. I'm not exactly a heavy poster anywhere, though.

Do people call you that in real life?

Nope. I don't even know how you would pronounce it. I rarely get nicknamed by people. The only ones I can think of are Telescope (my freshman dorm mates were very impressed by my eyesight) and Neko-chan (which translates to something like cat-girl, but if you don't know the story behind it, it sounds too cutesy.)

I'm with you on the TrendyKidsName's_Mom usernames. I don't mind references to being a mom or whatever, but I find it a little creepy to make your relationship to someone else your name. Like you're just an appendage of that person, or something. Which is especially weird when that person is a kid.

[User Picture]From: chrismaverick Date: January 24th, 2005 - 04:50 pm (Link)
hmmm... that's odd... I had always just assumed it was an andrew id. I find it weird enough that so many people go out of their way to use their andrew ids today when there was such a big push to get names that made sense back then. But you're the only person I know who chose to make a different andrew style id to the one that they were given. (as opposed to blk who also uses a fake andrew id sometimes, see below, but never had one of that style to start with.)

Where did you get your LJ name?
It's from the graphic novel series Love and Rockets by Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez -- it's one of Hopey's nicknames. My friend Joe started calling me "Hopita" years ago and I dug it.

Do you use it other places?
All over the place, yes.

Email?
Check.

Other websites?
Check.

RPGs?
I don't know what that means.

IM?
Yes.

Do people call you that in real life?
A few.

Answered above.

[User Picture]From: stuntviolist Date: January 22nd, 2005 - 08:59 pm (Link)
"Stuntviolist" has a bit of a story behind it. I was at a social function where most of the other people were musicians. I started introducing myself as "Aly--stuntviolist extraordinaire." It got a lot of laughs. Some of those people still call me "stuntviolist."

When I started my LJ I was having trouble finding a screen name and this one was available.

I don't use it for email. I have "stuntviola" on AIM, but I rarely use it. I sometimes use it as a screen name on random websites because it's almost always available.
[User Picture]From: chrismaverick Date: January 24th, 2005 - 04:54 pm (Link)
yeah, I didn't mean that there was anything wrong with your ID, btw. So I hope you don't feel like I was picking on you. Just that I for some reason find non-interest names to be more... uhh... namish.
