The invites have been emailed.

If you didn't get an invite, that means either I don't have your email address (or I forgot to add it to the list), don't actually know you, or I hate you. If you'd like an invite, please let me know so I can send you one.

In the meantime, please check out the pics of the photoshoot I did yesterday with the Gladstone Ruckus and let me know which ones you like and hate and why.

Hope to see everyone on Saturday. Dress sexy.

cool... you should have stopped by and said hi.

It was cool. the guy who built the sculpture also saw, and he stopped by and talked to us and asked for copies of the pics (which beat the hell out of having us arrested, which was my initial fear)

4, 6 and 9 are the ones that really captured all members of the band the best, but each is stylistically very different, so it depends on what you're looking to capture. Subjectively, I do like 6 the best -- I just like the impressionistic feel it has to it.

yeah, I kind of have this thing for harsh lighting. I need to get some cooler lights though for when i don't want that effect. I do find 6 very striking though. I just wonder it its too harsh.

Thanx for the comments.

I'd vote for #5 in every sense (lighting, focus, set up) IF Bryon didn't look like he was praying. Paul's face is WICKED but it's an interesting image to project.

Strongly prefer the darker images with the heavy lighting contrast to everything else, but that's all just my opinion.

See you Saturday.

see, I love 5. Interestingly though, it was Lisa's least favorite of the group shots because of the "funny faces." Personally, I actually like Bryon's stance and expression in that one. It matches the intensity in the lighting and angle. What I don't like about that one is the expression on Paul's face and the slight squinting in Lisa's left eye.

Thanx for the comments.

Photo #1 is my favorite. Photo #8 is my second favorite; it might rank higher if I were able to see the band members better/closer.

Also, the Lisa and Paul portraits are really good! I would like to see Brion and Tommy in similar natural light solo shots. And the Lisa singing @ PGH is cool too.

I think my biggest dislike of some of the pix is that in several (like #5, #6, and #9) various people are looking off screen and it seems like they're looking at nothing. In #1 and #8 and the portraits, I feel like they're looking at something. Kinda hard to describe. Nice images, though! :)

my biggest problem with GR1 is that I wish Lisa were standing about 3 1/2 inches over to the left of where she is so that it was a little tighter. I've actually considered digitally moving her. GR7 and GR8 are almost the same photos, but not exactly. What is it about 7 that you don't like as much as 8.

There actually are some solo pics I took of Tommy and Bryon I took in the more natural light. I just ended up not liking the poses or expressions as much. :-/

I certainly know what you mean about the "looking at something" vs. "looking at nothing" comment. I was trying to provide marks for them a couple times. "Look at that tripod over there." That said, I actually really do like the effect of looking at different off-screen things that happens in GR5.

Thanx for the comments.

I guess with #8 I really like seeing that lit sculpture (which I honestly thought was a Pgh bridge). #7 doesn't seem as dramatic without it.

And I was thinking more about the "looking at something" idea. I think it's more than that. It's more of a "thinking about something" look that people get. Like, when someone's looking at the camera, they interact with the viewer more obviously. Are they thinking "I love you", "I hate you", "I'm sexy", "You want to hear our band cuz we rock", etc. When they're looking off screen, I still want to feel that they're thinking something, even if it's directed not right at me. And I think a lot of that feeling is conveyed in the eyes, which is why I want them to be "looking at something".

In #1, the boys are clearly hamming it up. It's not that they're looking at something in particular, but it's kinda funny, like they all said, "let's strike a pose of mock deep thought", and then simultaneously all went "Hmmmm..." and the best part is Lisa in front, looking away, looking hot and sort of not amused. She focuses the energy. That's the tone I get.

In #5, the composition and colors are nice, but I don't feel a strong tone. Lisa is kinda scrutinizing the viewer, which works OK for me. Tommy's gaze is a bit disrupted by the glare on his glasses. I think it's a nice shot of Bryon, and I can kinda see him looking to the horizon, thinking "how far will the band go", but Paul looks like he just saw a tarantula or something, and it kinda seems out of place.

Perhaps that's over-analyzing things a bit, but it's fun! :)

no, you aren't overanalyzing at all. That's exactly the kind of feedback I wanted. So thankyou.

I have similar problems with 5. Specifically the thing with Paul's expression. The glare on Tommy's glasses is annoying, but I could deal with it. And if it ever was a serious issue, I could probably correct it in post. You think its worth it? There's not much I can do about Paul, short of yanking his head off of another pic and putting it back in.

on 1, I agree. I actually like the sillyness in the background. I think it adds a nice bit of dichotomy with Lisa's "hotness" without being too overdone and goofy.

I like the sculpture in #8 too. Maybe if we only ever print that photo at 16x20 and larger it would be ok.

As for people looking at the camera, I tend to not like direct looks at the camera all that much, but you're right, it totally depends on the mood. If I am doing glamour photography, I definitely want people "making love to the camera." If you're shooting a playboy layout or a cheesecake poster, you're totally trying to get the viewer to look at the pic and think "yep, she wants me." But when I'm doing something more casual, like this, I kind of like the feeling that the band has better things to think about than you (the viewer, not you specifically). But yeah, I agree that sometimes it comes across better than others. I took 196 photos. There were several that I out and out disregarded for that reason.

Thanx again. I'm glad you're having fun with it. Your comments were all good. Please feel free to look through any of the other photoshoots and portraits pics and give me your opions on those too.
