well, for starters, you always want to make your funk the P-Funk. George Clinton's Atomic Dog is supposedly the most sampled song in history. After that, it depends on what exactly you want. There are a wide variety of subtle derivations of funk. From Wild Cherry to Earth, Wind and Fire. Much of HipHop is funk inspired. Kurtis Blow back in the day, Outkast today, and no Hiphop group has borrowed as heavily from P-Funk as Digital Underground. Give me some examples of groups/songs you already like (funky or non), and maybe I can come up with some more concrete examples...
