11:38 am - on publishing my hostility...
for years, ludimagist has been trying to convince me to try and become a editorial writer. Lately, beststephi has been bugging me to try and submit some of my rants as editorials to Pulp or City Paper and the like. So here's the question for people. Well a few questions really. Do people think I should do that? Do people have suggestions of places I should submit said rants? Any favorite 1KWFFHs that you think I should submit? I'm actually kinda wary about using the 1KWFFHs because of the heavy language I use there. Opinions on that? Any subjects people think I should try writing 1000 words of free flowing hostility on?

I get the same requests from folks.

If you do it, I'll do it.

hmmm... any specific places to submit you have in mind?

No - I really know nothing about getting published. At all.

Pulp should be easy enough, though. Right?

well, I suppose it's a good start. But it's not really obvious from the website how to submit editorials. I guess we could write the editor adn ask, or just send him stuff and see what happens. Not sure what the proper protocol is for unsolicited submissions.

I know a guy at Pulp. I might be able to help you out with them. Right now we're trying to go through him to get a piece by Meredyth published as well.

coolness... actually, that'd be great. I'm all for evading actual process by just knowing people. I mean, what's the point of being popular otherwise?

Damn right.

Anyway, I'm in the middle of studying for finals right now, so I may not remember this later... Give me a poke if I don't get back to you on this in a week or two. I love your 1KWWFH (even if I don't always agree with them) and definitely think they deserve to be in print.

Sounds good... thanx...

actually, it amazes me that anyone ever actually agrees with my rants... *shrug*

Since most of your 1KWFFHs are current-news-motivated, I'm not sure any of them would work for immediate submission, unless you tweaked one to relate it to something more current; on the other hand, they do serve as good samples of your work, and proof that you can quickly and easily come up with articles of a given length. And yeah, the language is a bit harsh as-is for most papers, but it doesn't look like it'd be that hard to clean up if they demand it.

Bottom line, though: your writing's entertaining, well-constructed, and well-thought-out - above par for most editorials I see these days. Go for it!

I think that a 1,000 word rant will be too long for most readers, so I would suggest trying to limit yourself more (800 words max, preferably even less than that). They need not be hard targets, but keeping in mind the short attention of the average reader, it'll have more effect if you maximize the meaning of the rant by tightening up the prose.

yeah... I guess it is a little long... but on the other hand, sometimes it seems like its not that long at all. Again, I think it totally depends on the audience. I'm not sure how I should write for an editorial, but I wouldn't do any of number of words for the Free Flowing Hostility style rant. Not that I think anyone really pays attention, but I just feel like it wouldn't play as well unless it was exactly 1000 words.

what do other people think?

I think no one actually notices that it is 1000 words.

It would make a great title for a column whether or not it actually contained that many words. If someone writes and complains about not enough words, you have some to spare for their verbal beatdown.

It is not like a haiku where someone will sit there and count sylables.

Well, no I doubt anyone ever actually counts....But you know... I have like code and honor and stuff...

yeah, I'm kind of torn on the language thing. I actually like the way the 1KWFFHs read. Generally, I actually oppose the over use of profanity in writing. And I actually do worry that I might be overdoing it, but I try to walk that line very gently. Its just sort of the way I went with the LJ style rants. Before I got into LJ and I used to write for epinions, I portrayed an entirely different character than the one I use now. I was very oriented towards humor and less so towards anger. It was a different audience. I don't know what type of audience the free paper reading community is, so I'm not sure how to spin it.

Hmm... I'm curious, jetgrrl, annexation and lacechenault, are you guys reading this? What are your opinions on the way I write here, vs. the way I wrote back on epinions?

Bottom line, though: your writing's entertaining, well-constructed, and well-thought-out - above par for most editorials I see these days.

I consider that a huge compliment... Thank you.
