that begs an interesting question. What makes you want to be anonymous vs. not. I mean, why do you choose to be sometimes and sometimes not?

also, you don't use LJ much. Do you lurk still or did you also log in just to answer this? I assume the former, since I don't recall telling you or sunderi about this post ahead of time.

Well, I would not normally care about anonymity on the net, but, as a professional dance instructor, I now have a large group of people (my students) who know my name and might be interested in my personal life, who have no business knowing about it. Neither "Dan C" nor "yippee" would be fruitful Google searches. Whereas "Dan Calle" turns up mostly stuff related to me.

I jump on LJ occasionally, like I did today, and happened to see this entry. But I do read more often than post, so "lurk" is probably the appropriate term. :-)

Have you considered using the filters? I've found those pretty useful.

I'm now in the same situation as a university instructor (last semester and next year), so I am really careful about what gets put online in anything resembling a public post.

That's a good point. I hadn't been putting anything really private on LJ for that reason, but I hadn't really latched on to the whole filters idea. The posts I'd want to keep more private are elsewhere in other communities.
