Personally, I'm not a big fan or ear piercing on infants, mostly because it's a fashion choice and I think a child should have a say in anything that is even remotely permanent on their body.

Anything remotely permanent, that is, except circumsision. But I fully acknowledge that my belief on that is a purely religious one, and so I separate what I think is "right" with what I would personally do.

Sort of like "I like the smoking ban, but I don't think it's right for the gov't to decide such things."

Along those lines, I'm a big fan of giving the kid a bracelet or something to identify her. But a tattoo?! A little permanent. At least these tattoos appear to be basically faux freckles.

I don't think it's anything more shocking than earrings. I wouldn't do it to my child, but I don't think of less of those that would... unless it was more than dots.

but would you give your child earrings?

No. I think it's tacky. But that is me. I don't begrudge other parents for piercing their childrens ears.

that's fair.

you know, honestly the whole ear piercing thing doesn't bother me. I mean, to an extent you're right of course. But also, in all likelihood a lot of your tastes (in fashion or anything else) are probably greatly affected by your parents early conditioning anyway (intentionally or not). I mean, you're not anti-circumcision because as a jewish family, your family raised you to believe that it wasn't wrong. If you were raised in a household that was against women wearing pants, you'd probably wear a lot more skirts. The problem is that sometimes people do develop differing opinions. If you want to wear pants instead of a skirt, then as an adult there's really nothing your parents can do about it. If you don't like earrings you can take them out, and the holes would probably close eventually anyway. If a boy decides he isn't jewish anymore, dealing with the lack of foreskin is a lot trickier. That said, I don't have one, and I don't miss it. So really, I don't think the tattoo thing is all that barbaric once I think about it. It's just a gutwrench reaction.
